Did you know? Issue 3: Birkin Bag

Hello hello,

I'll finally talk about the real Birkin in this post:)
Other than knowing that the bag is worth a pretty hefty amount out of your paycheck and Victoria Beckham has over 100 Birkin bags? Tell me, what else do you know about this bag?
Do you know when it was created and how the design came about?

Here comes the DID YOU KNOW!

Did you know that the famous Birkin bag was named and designed for Jane Birkin in 1984! Jane Birkin was on a flight, the bag she was carrying fell apart and all her stuff fell out. She commented to the passenger next to her that she wished Hermes would have a bag that was big enough to fit all her things. Yep! you've guessed it! The passenger was none other than Jean-Louis Dumas, the chairman of Hermes! Upon hearing that, he created a protoype in cardboard, after discussion with Birkin about a few changes like making the pockets bigger, the Birkin bag was born!

Extra treat: Did you know that the Kelly bag was named after Grace Kelly? She was then the new Princess of Monaco! How cool is that?

“I was on an airplane when a plastic bag holding all my things broke and everything fell out — my date book, papers, everything. Just as I was saying how I wish Hermès would make a bag that could fit all my things, the man sitting next to me happened to work for Hermès — it was Jean-Louis Dumas, the head designer! They already had the Kelly bag, named after Grace Kelly, so he began work on the Birkin bag. I went down to the atelier, and he had made it in cardboard. And we talked about it, and I said they should make some changes, like making pockets bigger. And that’s how it was made.” Jane Birkin

I'm going to admit, I had no idea how the Birkin bag was created! How amazing is that? That's exactly why I carry a sketchbook around all the time, inspiration can struck at any moment, from people, things, even the weather. The famous Birkin bag is just one prime amazing example of a designer truly putting thought into his customer's desire. Opinions matter, remember don't be afraid to say what you really think, silence doesn't always speak louder than words. Who knows the next great thing might be named after you! The twist and turns of fate can be kinda funny sometimes huh?

Pretty nifty eh? does that make you want a Birkin even more! haha.
